Lost Pets

Each year, Butler County Humane Society takes in over 500 lost or stray pets. If you have lost a pet, we want to help you take the steps necessary to reunite with your four-legged friend. You know your pet best, and we encourage you to visit our shelter to look for your dog or cat.

Butler County Humane Society holds all stray animals for a 48-hour stray hold to give owners a chance to reclaim their pets. Dogs and cats receive a full-body scan for microchips at intake and before they are adopted or transported. If identification is found, attempts are made to contact owners.

You can also use the resources below to help you search for your pet.

After two years of wondering what happened to their 10-year-old orange tabby cat, Heather Moon & family were reunited with Katie, thanks to microchipping!

Is your pet lost?

A lost pet can be a frightening experience for any pet parent. Immediate action is crucial, but where do you start? Follow the steps below for the best chance of a reunion.

What to do immediately after your pet goes missing:

Walk the neighborhood.

Most pets are found close to home. Take a walk around the immediate area and speak to any neighbors, postal service workers, landscapers, or anyone who may have seen your lost pet.

utilize scents.

Put a couple of your pet’s favorite items (beds, blankets, toys, etc.) near the most common entry ways into your home. The scent of smelly foods like canned tuna, or cooking meat on a grill can also help your pet find their way home.

Make sure your pet’s microchip information is updated.

If a finder takes your missing pet to be scanned for a microchip, ensure all information is correct so you are contacted immediately.

Check with your local animal services, animal control, and animal shelters.

Call to see if your missing pet is at one of these places. Many groups let you file a lost report, where you can leave a photo of your pet and your contact info. Fill out Butler County Humane Society’s Lost Report!

Continue to spread the word about your missing pet.

Ensure posters or flyers are large, bright, and contain only relevant information. Post these in high traffic areas and near where your lost pet was last seen.

Resources & Tips for Finding Lost Pets

The Butler PA Lost and Found Animals Facebook Page is monitored by several area nonprofits, including Butler County's OVADA (One Voice for the Abused Domestic Animals). Area residents are invited to post both lost and found pets on the page to create a central location for networking lost pets and getting them home.

Whether you’ve lost a pet or found a stray, posters are encouraged to:

  1. Upload a picture.

  2. Include the geographic location where the pet was lost or found.

  3. Include pertinent information about the pet (age, breed/mix, collar, microchip, gender, altered status, unique markings, etc.)

  4. Share contact information so the potential owner can reach out, or the finder can reach out to the owner.

In Butler County, dog owners are legally required to keep their pets on a leash or under direct control when off their property. A pet has a better chance of being returned if they always wears a collar and an ID tag with your name, address, and telephone number. Microchipping is available here at the Butler County Humane Society or at your local veterinarian.
