Surrender Your Pet

We understand that making the decision to surrender a pet is very difficult and we are committed to help find the best possible solution for you and your pet.

Admissions Process

If you decide to surrender your pet to Butler County Humane Society, please note that we do not accept walk-in surrenders.

As a no-kill shelter, we do not euthanize animals to make space. This means we can accept new animals only when space becomes available through adoption. As a result, our waitlist may range from a few weeks to several months, depending on current capacity. While there is no guaranteed wait time, our team will always provide you with information about other available resources to help during the waiting period.

Using a managed admission process ensures we have the resources to provide each animal with the best care and accommodations. It allows us to properly isolate, treat, and prevent illness from spreading to at-risk populations. Managing animal admissions helps us plan and prepare, and allows us to save more lives.

To begin the process, you may complete our Online Surrender Form or call us directly to provide the necessary information about your pet.

Things to know prior to your surrender appointment:

Bring all veterinary records to your appointment.

This will help prevent your animal from receiving unnecessary vaccinations or procedures and will speed up their medical assessment.

Allow 30 minutes at Butler County Humane Society for your appointment.

This will allow time to complete a personality profile so we can better understand your pet’s temperament in the home, which will assist in getting them adopted more quickly.

Bring the animal yourself.

We will receive the most accurate information if you bring your pet in personally. If you cannot do so, we require written and signed consent from you authorizing another person to act as your agent and to bring the animal in on your behalf.

Bring a government-issued photo ID.

Identification must be presented at your appointment to verify ownership and finish the required paperwork.

Bring payment.

Butler County Humane Society requests a surrender fee of $100 to help cover the expenses of preparing pets for rehoming, and ensure your pet receives the best possible care. The shelter accepts cash or credit card payments.
