Just For Kids
Serving Our Community
At BCHS, we’re passionate about creating an engaging, educational environment where kids of all ages feel welcome and inspired! We love giving children the chance to dive into what it truly means to care for an animal and love them for a lifetime. From hands-on programs like Shelter Buddies to exciting shelter visits, there’s truly something for everyone!
Children in grades 1st–8th are invited to read in our open cat room to boost confidence and learn about respectful, humane treatment for all animals. Not only does this make reading fun, it also builds a child’s confidence in reading aloud.
Shelter Buddies Reading Program
The Shelter Buddies Reading Program serves both cats and children. Children are encouraged to bring their own favorite books or read from our selection.
Who can benefit from the Shelter Buddies Reading Program?
Children struggling to read
Children needing a confidence boost
Children participating in school or extracurricular activities such as Boy or Girl Scouts
Children wanting to spend time with cats!
Our cats will also learn to socialize with your child’s help. It’s a great way to help build confidence while also teaching the importance of animal care.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Children in grades 1st-8th grade who are accompanied by an adult. Readings are limited to two children at a time to ensure a calming atmosphere.
WHEN CAN WE READ TO THE CATS?
The Shelter Buddies Reading Room is available on two Sundays a month from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Please call us at 724-789-1150 to schedule your reading appointment, as we offer them only on certain Sundays. You can also visit our Facebook Events Page to see which dates are scheduled!
HOW LONG CAN WE READ FOR?
We schedule 30-minute time slots per family, so call us to schedule today!
Animal Education for Students
Add some furry fun to your curriculum with Butler County Humane Society's classroom visits, assembly programs, and field trips!
We frequently receive requests from students for information about our services and animal welfare issues for classroom projects. With advance notice, we may be able to offer students up to 30 minutes with a BCHS staff member for gathering information needed for a classroom project. This can be done via phone, email, or in person.
If your request falls within our parameters, please submit it to development@butlercountyhs.org.
Please allow a minimum of 48 hours for a BCHS staff member to respond after the request is submitted. A scheduled appointment is required, and we will do our best to schedule students within 1-2 weeks of the request.
We ask students to research information on our website as much as possible before submitting a request for assistance.
